Mamallapuram and way home

We arrived to Mamallapuram around midnight so we had some difficulties to find a hostel but we managed and went to bed around 1 a.m. Waking up at 6 a.m. to see the sunrise was hard but completely worth it:) We went just me and Eve so we went to pick up Lucka afterwards and went for a breakfast in the restaurant with tables on the street. Well, restaurant is maybe too strong word. It was a simple shack with cooker where guy was serving traditional Indian breakfast dishes like poori, rice pongal, dosa and idli. It was delicious and dirt-cheap. Then we went to see main attraction - Five rathas.

Madurai, Trichy and Pondicherry

We arrived to Madurai around 2 a.m. and found a decent guesthouse for just 450 Rs there. We were not repelled by the rat running through the corridor and slept tight till 6 a.m. when we went to see the Sri Menakshi temple. The temple is vast. We walked around it for about two hours. There was a hall of thousands pillars, decorated ceilings, tons of sculptures, tons of people and on the background meditation songs. The atmosphere in the temple was moving.

Backwaters and Varkala

Well, I wrote the backwaters part already but then the internet went offline and it did not come up the rest of the day. Well, the internet accessibility is maybe even worst than four years ago as this time we are not so often in touristy places (everything closed at 9:30 p.m. in Munnar for instance) and then there are still blackouts and connection cuts. Plus the speed is not much better - e.g. very slow.

So apparently Indian Rails do have a reservation system but if you don't have a reservation it does not matter so you can go and stay somewhere. Eva slept on the floor. I offered her my berth but she stayed awake talking to Indian kids and then their mothers so she did not even sleep much and she has a henna drawing all over her upper arm and palm:). We arrived to Ernakulam town as expected at 3:30 a.m. took early breakfast on the station and moved to the bus stand. There we caught the early bus to Munnar. The bus started climbing after 60 km and the climb was endless.
